UPDATED AGAIN
EVENT - Mon/Tue - Nov 18/19 - Late night/early morning
The
Leonids, powered by eCult
UPDATES:
So, according to to
the Leonid storm flux estimator, the Leonids will start to ramp up around 3am on Monday night. They will be best viewed from a mountaintop, where they will reach a maximum flux of 4,195 at approximately 5:20am (what does that number mean? I don't know - but it's hella larger than the standard levels of around 4). Shortly after, they will ramp down again, sputtering out around 6am. Weather should be clearing up around the time of the storm, so viewing should be decent.
So, my plan is to meet up at 8pm for a late dinner on monday night and then head out around 10pm. We'll car camp, nap and sing songs on the guitar until 3am, at which point we'll all wake up simultaneously and be blown away. Currently, I'm thinking of going to the Blue Hills (which is maybe not quite legal), or maybe joining
the Harvard Space Dorks.
In general, I'm against the idea of heading out too late, because I'd like to allow for getting held up, don't want people to have to get up first, etc. This is how I missed them last year. These could well be the best meteors you ever see, so don't miss them (even if you don't see them with eCult)!
OLD ENTRY:
So, even if you suck like me and missed the Leonids last year, this year they promise to be just as good - with the increased frequency of meteors balanced by the nigh full moon. That means you get one more chance to see what may likely be the most spectacular meteor shower for many years to come.
In any case, Momma nature's not gonna haul your ass out of this one again, so make sure you get out of the city to see the show. If you'd like to come along with me, watch this space (by which I mean this entry) for details or just give a call.
